Thermacool
is the name for the air conditioning system developed
at the request of aircraft owners who have always wanted
an electric air conditioning system capable of being run
on the ground with a GPU and, at low RPM. Until now such
systems were only available for twin engine aircraft with
28 VDC and 100 amp alternators. With the development of Thermacool came the ability to run all electric air conditioning systems
on less power.
Air
conditioning for general aviation aircraft use automobile
compressors to move the refrigerant through the system. Some
compressors are belt driven off the engine, some are hydraulically
driven and some driven with electric motors and belts. The
later has always been a favorite so the aircraft could be
cooled on the ground. However the single engine market was
exempt from this type of system due to the high electric loads
and weight.
Thermacool
air conditioning has addressed many of the mentioned problems
and is introducing an aircraft system that will make it possible
for most general aviation aircraft to fly with electric powered
AC.
The heart of the system is Kelly Aerospace's compressor, and brushless
DC powered technology. The new compressor is a hermetically
sealed unit utilizing a rotary pump design, driven by a brushless
DC motor. The compressor weighs only 14 pounds and runs on
24VDC or 48VDC. The total system draws only 50 amps.
Working with this design, the system is virtually
maintenance free. Location of the Thermacool compressor can be accomplished just about anywhere in the
aircraft. Small in size, the compressor can optimize space
requirement and not jeopardize performance. Lighter weight
connective components and brushless DC fan motors are also
used because of the higher efficiency and judicial use of
power. Cooling comfort can be enjoyed even before the engine
starts. |
